SPEAKING FINAL

SPEAKING FINAL

The speaking mid-term will be a 5 minute, one-on-one interview. You will be asked five of the following groups of questions listed below, one from each unit (time permitted). As least one of the questions will be a role play. You will be judged according to the following criteria:

(1) comprehension of the questions asked 5%
(2) clear pronunciation with proper intonation 5%
(3) correct grammar and variety of vocabulary 5%


UNIT 6

1. Where did you last go on vacation? Was it your first time there? Where did you stay? Had you stayed there before?

2. Name something fun you did on vacation. Where were you? Why was it fun? Had you done something like this before?

3. Talk about something you didn’t want to do that turned out to be pleasant. Why didn’t you want to do it? Why did it turn out to be better than you expected?

4. Talk about a vacation in which something went wrong. Where were you? How did you try to solve the problem?

UNIT 7

1. Talk about the appearance of one of your friends. What has your friend had done to their hair or any other part of their body? What is their fashion style? Do you like it?

2. How would you change your appearance so that people wouldn’t recognize you? What would you have done to your hair and body? What kind of clothes would you wear?

3. Talk about someone who has dramatically changed how they look. What did they have done? How did they use to look? Was the change positive or negative?

4. Role play. I will give you a situation in which I have to change my appearance. You will have to advise me on what I should change.

UNIT 8

1. What do people your age normally worry about? Why do they worry about this? Do you worry about this problem as well?

2. Discuss a time when you gave a friend advice. Who was it? What was his or her problem? What advice did you give? Did your friend follow your advice?

3. How have your problems changed since you were younger? What did you use to worry about that you don’t think about now? What new worries do you have now that you didn’t have in the past?

4. Role play. I will ask you about an imaginary situation. You will tell me what you would do if you were in that situation.

UNIT 9

1. Talk about a situation where you saw a cultural mistake in customs. What was the mistake? What should the person have done? How was the situation handled?

2. What is the most common way people greet each other in your country? Do men and women greet each other differently? Does the greeting depend on the person’s age? If so, how?

3. Name two Korean customs. How important are each of these customs? If somebody does not follow these customs, what usually happens? Do you think cultural customs are important?

4. Role play. I will describe a situation and you will have to give me advice, using the phrases “should” and “would.”


UNIT 10

1. Talk about a situation where you were skeptical of something. What was it? Why were you suspicious? Did you ever find out for certain what happened?

2. Discuss something unusual that a friend of yours believes. Why do you think your friend believes this and most other people do not? Does he or she give any reasons for believing something so strange?

3. Name something you used to believe when you were younger. When did you stop believing? Are you now convinced it is not true, or are you unsure? Why or why not?

4. Role play. I will describe a situation and you will have to make guesses about what happened.

UNIT 1

1. What is your favorite hobby? Why do you enjoy doing this hobby? How long have you been doing it?

2. What have you been studying these days? What else have you been doing recently? How else have you been spending your free time?

3. Name an activity you have been doing for a long time. How long have you been doing it? Why do you do it? Do you still enjoy it?

4. What are the most popular hobbies in your country? How many people do these activities? How long have they been popular? Why are they so popular?

UNIT 2

1. Name a popular television show in your country. What kind of show is it? How long has it been on television? Why do you think it is so popular?

2. What kinds of TV shows are popular for people your age? Why do you think these shows are popular with people your age? What do you think about these shows?

3. Do you know what’s on TV tonight? What time is it on? What kind of show is it? Do you usually watch it? Why or why not?

4. Name a soap opera from your country. Do you watch this soap opera? Why or why not? What type of person watches this show?

UNIT 3

1. Name a famous icon in your country. What do you think it symbolizes? Why is it so famous?

2. What is your favorite style of art? How would you describe this type of art? Why do you think you like it?

3. Name a famous city in your country. Where is it located? Why is it famous? What is your opinion of this city?

4. What style of art would you consider complicated? Why do you think this style is complicated? Do you prefer complicated art? Why or why not?

UNIT 4

1. What type of person are you? What do you think is your most positive characteristic? What is your most negative characteristic?

2. Who is your best friend? What kind of a person are they? Why do you think the two of you are close friends?

3. Do you think you are similar to other members of your family? Why or why not? What family member do you have the most in common with?

4. Name a friend or family member who is very different from you. How is his or her personality different from your own? Is there anything positive about your differences?

UNIT 5

1. Do you have a cell phone? Where did you buy it? When did you buy it? Why did you get it?

2. What is your favorite possession? What do you use it for? Could you live without it?

3. What technological devices do you use for entertainment? What do you use them for? Which is your favorite? Why?

4. What technological devices do you use for getting information? What do you use them for? Which is your favorite? Why?

Here is an overview of all the basic information for the class. Please review and let me know if you have any questions.

First, make sure you have a course outline. You should get during the first class. Also, you can access on-line. This gives information on the grading for the class.

Please note that if you are absent more than 4 times, you automatically fail the course.

Second, here are the instructions for watching EXTRA episodes. This is part of your homework for each week.

1. First, go to : http://www.kyungwon.ac.kr/

2. Next, choose 'cybercampus' on the page (right side middle)

3. Then, login with your ID (Student number and Password)

4. Now, choose your class course on the list you see.

5. Next, go into 'kang-ee-shil' on the left of the page.

6. Then, Choose 'kang-ee-shil-ib-jang' at the top of the list.

7. Finally, you may choose and watch the Extr@ episode.


Finally, do not forget that after each unit in SMART CHOICE, you have to do the review section of the CD-rom and bring to class. Again, email me if you have any trouble.

2. Role play. I will describe a health situation to you, and you will have to give advice.

10. Guessing game. I will think of an animal, and you will have to ask questions to try to guess what it is.

3) Login

4) Choose "Class"

5) Go into "Kang-ee-shill"

6) Watch the episode


Instructions for SmartChoice Weekly Homework:

1) you must have a computer that prints

2) start CD

3) create username; for example, student # + unit 1; change username for each unit; for example, use student # + unit 2

4) Choose unit 1

5) After finishing and completing exercises, choose "scoreboard" at the bottom; make sure all the answers are correct

6) print your completed scores and bring to class
